Community Meeting: "Scenic: A Language for World Modeling and Data Generation for Robotics"

Hello everybody! Let’s celebrate spring time with a Gazebo Community Meeting! Our next invited speakers will talk about their use of simulation to generate complex environments. Here’s the abstract of the presentation:

As robots operate in more complex environments and in collaboration with humans, there is a need to model and generate such scenarios in simulation to rigorously test them prior to deployment. These scenarios are stochastic and comprise multiple agents, human or robot, interacting with each other. This talk gives an overview of a scenario modeling language called Scenic that meets the above need. Scenic is a domain-specific probabilistic programming language that allows one to model and sample from a distribution of scenarios consisting of multiple agents interacting under spatial and temporal constraints. Scenic has been used in various application domains such as autonomous vehicles, indoor robotics, aviation, multi-agent reinforcement learning, and virtual/augmented reality. As an example, Scenic is officially integrated into CARLA, a popular simulator in the self-driving car domain, as a scenario modeling language. Currently, we are interfacing Scenic to Gazebo and ROS to support their wide base of users. We are interested to hear different interests and needs of potential users early on so as to be able to support those needs.

Agenda:

  1. Latest Gazebo news - Addisu Tadesse (Intrinsic)
  2. “Scenic: A Language for World Modeling and Data Generation for Robotics”. Sanjit A. Seshia (Berkeley) and Daniel J. Fremont (UC Santa Cruz)

We opened a slot for short (3 minutes) lighting presentations. If you’re interested in talking about your Gazebo project contact me (caguero AT openrobotics DOT org) and I’ll book your slot.
